Day 14 | Best Laid Plans

Read: James 4:13–17

Key Verse: Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin. James 4:17

We often get lost in the assumption that we control our destiny. We work hard, plan for tomorrow, give a little (or maybe a lot), and try to do good. However, this is not the way to listen to and follow God. He has His plans for us, plans that bring His purposes to our world. Planning for tomorrow, giving to others, and trying to do good are all worthy goals. However, when our efforts crowd out the voice of God and the way of Jesus, then we are not following Him. This is disobedience because we are catering to our own needs and sense of safety and routine with a bit of sacrifice sprinkled in. Remember, disobedience is sin.

Following Jesus is risky because He asks us to get out of our safety zone, off of our own plans, and do something in His Name. It could be to speak up, offer a hug, coach Little League, attend a certain college, or travel to far places in His Name.

I’m reminded of Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding: in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.

Take the risk to trust. Hold on tight for the adventure of your life. Remember He loves you more than you can ever know.

Prayer: Lord, help me remember that I’m not alone when You ask me to risk. You are with me and You direct my ways. Thank You Lord.
