Day 13 | Attack of the Seaweed Monster

Read: Numbers 13:31–33

Key Verse: So they gave out to the sons of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we have gone, in spying it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants…”  Numbers 13:32

When I was in grade school, each summer I went to camp. It was a week filled with adventures, awesome fireside songs, and pranks on the other cabins. But one thing that totally freaked me out was the seaweed! Water skiing was one of the most popular activities, but as I floated in the water I could feel the seaweed on my legs. I was convinced there was a HUGE northern pike waiting to take a chunk out of my flesh. My friends thought I was nuts, but I made sure they understood what awaited them in the water…a flesh-eating northern pike.

Obviously there was no man-eating fish in the lake. But fear of the unknown or what seems intimidating, often causes us to imagine a reality that isn’t real. Frightened, we often forget what is true. We can forget that God is with us. We can forget the promises of His Word. We can forget that the power of the Holy Spirit is greater than the “reality” of the world. And as we begin to share our worries with others around us, we spread fear instead of hope.

What has you feeling afraid or intimidated? Are you paralyzed by your fears or are you relying on God? God wants us to share the bounty of His promises and is with us regardless of our fears. Are you ready to take a risk? Let’s spread a good report of God’s greatness and His hope with those in our world.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, give me the eyes to see what You see and the courage to lean into those things that intimidate me. I know You are with me and I trust that Your power is greater than anything the world might throw at me. Amen.
