Key Verse: The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. – Matthew 13:44
It seems every Friday night dozens of signs magically appear along roads all over our community. Whether they are advertising new homes or re-sales, realtors hope these signs will be enough for you to visit their open house and consider making an offer.
Imagine some weekend you decide to check out one of these open houses. The home is being sold as is and everything inside is included in the sale. As you tour the house, everything seems fairly ordinary until you open the small closet under the staircase. Inside you find a cardboard box filled with a priceless collection of precious stones and gold coins. Buy the house and the treasure would be yours. What would you do? Would you decide to think it over and decide tomorrow? Would you haggle over some minor repair or cosmetic issue? Or would you do whatever it took to close the deal as fast as possible?
This is essentially the scene Jesus paints in Matthew 13. This opportunity is so incredible it’s worth sacrificing everything to be part of it. So it is with the kingdom of God, Jesus says. The chance to have our sins forgiven and to live as part of God’s family is the opportunity of a lifetime. And it’s worth whatever the cost. What price are you willing to pay?
Prayer: Lord, I don’t want to miss this opportunity. Please show me what it means to be part of Your Kingdom and give me the courage to seize this chance no matter what it costs. Thank You for making it possible for me to be part of Your family and work in this world.
