Key Verse: “…fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” – Hebrews 12:2
One of the most popular shows on TV is Deadliest Catch. The show follows several professional fishing boats and their crews as they risk their lives in pursuit of valuable Alaskan crab. To say many of the characters on the show are rough around the edges would be an understatement. But the images and stories of these fishermen risking their lives on the treacherous seas of the Bering Strait is exciting television. What motivates these men to risk their lives? The answer is simple: money. In a few weeks or months, they can make more money than most people make in a year. For them, it’s worth it to risk their lives in pursuit of the promise of a huge payday.
What motivates you to do what you do?
Hebrews 12:2 makes it clear what motivated Jesus. Even in the face of something as brutal as a cross, Jesus offered His life to make it possible for lost and broken people to return to God. The joy of fulfilling His Father’s mission kept Jesus going when most would have walked away. His passion was to see lost women and men reconciled to God, freed from the sin of their lives and released to live as part of God’s mission in this world. He’s invited us to be part of that work as well.
Prayer: Lord, give me Your passion. Please give me a heart that is willing to sacrifice so that others may come to know Your love and grace. Thank You for enduring the cross so I could be set free to be part of Your work in this world.
